Fools and gods
Popping up around us
Sparring with their vocal rush
Maroon light, seeping ambiance
Allowing the drift, encouraging this pull
A tug
Almost a shrug

You can step in time

Inside the alley, up, up past the first shuddered windows, too overgrown with stifled evenings, exists the only thing everyone can agree on. The only thing a truly alive creature, human or otherwise, can expect. It can be sitting there right in front of you, in the middle of the room or filling it, and you might be sitting there waiting, knowing it'll begin at any second. But it slaps you awake anyway, piping hot on your new clothes. You laugh or roll your eyes because you always say to yourself "this time it won't catch me off guard." But really you know it will. It never fails.

Making your foot bounce along whether it's in time or not
Suddenly your eyes are squinted and your lips are stretched
Your nerves don't know what to do with themselves
So they rattle your head, bobbing it up and down, maybe even side to side
You don't know how to hold on so your hands fumble, clapping in desperation
Or your fingers mash, snapping
Click, pause, click, pause, click, CHABOW!
Oh, here comes the part where your legs want in
Maybe someone retches you from your chair, or you them
Either way, you're learning you can dance
